What Do Customers Say About the Green Mountain Energy Company?
Positive reviews:
“I’ve been a customer for over a year through O&R. Honestly after reading the other reviews, I realize how unreliable yelp is. I’m happy with my service. I signed up knowing I would pay a little more money for renewable. Maybe it’s just me, but saving the planet is worth it.” – Kelly H. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ May 20, 2017
“I’m so glad that green mountain exists. I’ve been enrolled for around two years now and have stayed a happy customer, both with the rates and the mission. I’m sure to renew every time I move and I recommend it to my friends. My roommate is actually in charge of our electric bill now and I he has us on it too. I didn’t do the fixed rate option at first, but now we do and I’m glad we did! I get to know we’re doing a little more for our planet as long as I’m putting my dollars in renewables. I’m not only a user of Green Mountain energy, but I’m now an employee as well! I’m happy to take part in getting the word out and offer the perspective of a customer as well as a knowledgeable agent.” – Taylor S. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ October 16, 2018
Negative reviews:
“A bloody scam. They will charge you more on your electricity bill. When you signed up, of course, it was not mentioned. BEWARE!!!” – Elizaveta B. ⭐☆☆☆☆ August 1, 2025
“Worst company ever.. they change the due date every month. They charge a 20.00 free for discount and 8.00 late fee. When you have never been discounted or connected. Nothing but fake green scames!!!!!” – Lucas ⭐☆☆☆☆ December 5, 2025
Positive reviews:
“My rates went up after the contract period. But, it’s up to you to ask the right questions when signing up and read the agreement to understand what you are getting. They do send a notification in the mail when your term is coming up. All you need to do is call and request a new contract rate at that point. With that being said, I called and was given excellent service from their customer service team in getting everything resolved and back at the preferred rate. I don’t mind paying an extra $10/month to support green energy.” – Daniel ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ September 4, 2019
“So i found this company a couple of months ago, and I have nothing but good things to say. It looks like they might have done things differently in the past, but the negative comments I’m reading here are nothing like my experience. My bill went up about $8 from before i signed up, which is right about what they said it would do. I know that my flat rate is only good for 12 months but i can just call them up and get a new flat rate. It’s pretty easy, and i feel really good about how i get my electricity now.” – A. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ August 1, 2019
Negative reviews:
“Charged me over 22 cents kwh, when Reliant charges 16.9. Reliant also has solar and wind electricity, so we’re just spending less money for same service. Reliant also charges late fees except it’s only $10.00 reconnect.” – Narciso ⭐☆☆☆☆ March 28, 2024
“Very cheap company robbing people for $20 for discontinue fee, the auto pay problem and they send late fee $3.95 +$20 discontinue fee, but the meter is still there. And I talk to customer service is no use.” – Olive ⭐☆☆☆☆ March 2, 2024
Positive reviews:
“Cut off my electric service and no bill was due. I am on Dialysis and have a medical condition that requires me to take 9 to 10 hours of dialysis each day. Green Mountain cut my service on April 24, 2024 did not get it turn back on the April 28, 2024 missed 3 days of dialysis very sick. Talked to Green Mountain spoke several reps found out they had turned it off by mistake I purchased REMOVED of food from Kroger and all food went bad. Then I had to get a room at Hotel after paying my. Hotel fees were and 2 days of work.” – Gilda C. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ April 29, 2024
Negative reviews:
“I am calling them last 4 months to fix problems they make my account is resident but they put commercial now last 6 months they charge me higher price for commercial I call them always take 45 to 1.30 hours to find to talk to customer service top of that they charging me late payment and disconnect charges around $43 dollars they r the one ask me dont pay till we finalize the problem bad customer service.” – Javed A. ⭐☆☆☆☆ June 10, 2024
“They charged you a late penalty fee in addition to a REMOVED final notice letter they are charging you twice for the same thing.. It’s the only energy company in my area so they do whatever they want to do to you with out any consequences.” – Corletha P. ⭐☆☆☆☆ April 2, 2024
Negative reviews:
“They charge you $395 for early cancelation fee even if you cancel one day before the contract ends. It is not a prorated fee as with other companies.” – Alf G. ⭐☆☆☆☆ November 22, 2025
“Never heard of these people but let me tell u a story. I had a bad experience this company just showed up on my electric bill and caused me to get a 250.00 early deactivate fee and they won’t pay me back for there screw up. They said my wife did but she didn’t I asked her. She said no she didn’t. Because I know if she would of done it she would of used my name. So I now have more expensive electric bill that they are the same price as my electric company you won’t save anything. So just took them off make sure you shop wisely.” – Robert Fitting ⭐☆☆☆☆ February 16, 2024
Positive reviews:
“Working at Green Mountain Energy for almost 3 years was truly a blessing for me. I always felt supported and cared for and also was able to make a lot of money in addition. Couldn’t ask for anymore from a workplace at a job. Highly recommend this job to anyone, but especially anyone looking for a flexible schedule.” – Sales Ambassador ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ July 27, 2022
“The company culture and management team here is incredible, I genuinely found this to the be the best part time job I’ve ever had and it isn’t even close. I’m not sure how this exact job is in other areas, but the Pittsburgh team was phenomenal, not to mention the pay was amazing for a part time job. (Commission was $70 per account signed up, and I could often attain multiple sales within a 2-3 hour period depending on location and time of day.)” – Sales Agent ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ June 23, 2022
Negative reviews:
“If you own a car they use you to load/unload tents, signs and tables at events which can be 2 and sometimes 3 hours away. Unless you are loading, you are not paid for driving time (And if you are loading, the driving pay is very little). Sales are few and far between. You are not learning anything useful. No opportunities for advancement. Just a total waste of time.” – Sales Agent ⭐☆☆☆☆ October 26, 2022
“Very preferential treatment of favorite employees. Constantly cutting management pay and firing people. Quotas are randomly set not based on reality.” – Area Sales Manager ⭐☆☆☆☆ October 30, 2021
Positive reviews:
“I’ve been in service with them since December until now and I’ve had no issues with them. Any concerns that I have, when I did call, the representative would handle. I give them “A’s” all the way.” – Tija M. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ June 2012
“We just send in our bill every month and we haven’t had any problems, so it has been going fine. One of the reasons why we were interested in their services is because they get 100% of their electricity from wind power, which is great. Texas is the largest provider of wind energy in the United States, so we thought of going with them instead of most other places in Texas, where electricity is generated from coal or natural gas. We have never had any problems with them. When we initially decided that they were going to be our energy provider, we had quite a bit of interaction with them in getting things worked out, in terms of how to pay their monthly bills and so on. Other than that, we haven’t had any issues for them to call us back on. They were knowledgeable and friendly. It is hard for me to get a handle on how their prices are, because electricity is so much different than buying a grill or something like that. I think it is a fair price; at least we are paying less than what we paid before we moved here. When we were setting it up, there were times when we called and left messages and they were prompt. They knew how to handle the situation for us.” – Sigrid C. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ April 2013
Negative reviews:
“We were not pleased with them. They came door to door and tried to sell inexpensive packages to us that were not feasible. They mistakenly cut our power off because the mail was delivered incorrectly. I will not use them again in the future.” – Donald M. ⭐☆☆☆☆ November 2011
“I called and they informed me that I did not originally sign up for a yearly plan and rather, had signed up for a partial plan. I knew this was not the case but I had no written materials to prove it. One of the customer service representatives that I spoke with confirmed that they only offered the lower rates during a period at the end of the year when the summer/winter rates switch. I began service in November of 2006, when the lower rates are offered. They informed me that I had signed up for a short term, then signed up for the yearly rate in July, and which ended in June. The rep. said the yearly contracts were not offered EXCEPT at the end of the year. I spoke to a customer service representative and a supervisor during two calls to Green Mountain Energy and they twice I was told that they are not “REQUIRED BY LAW” to inform me when my rates are changing but that they had informed me anyway. The same “required by law” phrase made me wonder what they were concealing. I asked to be switched to a yearly plan so that I could lock in the lower rate without the $5-a-month service charge. They switched my service but said it might take two to three MONTHS for my bill to reflect the lower rate; yet as a new customer, they were able to sign me up immediately. With computers, I do not understand how it could take that long to make a change; it seems like a “bait and switch” ploy to squeeze more money out of a loyal customer who pays her bill in full and on time each and every month. I told the supervisor on the phone how dissatisfied I was but she didn’t seem to care. On another occasion, I had received a promotional email that was signed by the Senior Vice President of Residential Services, Paul N. Markovich. On the previously mentioned call, I asked the supervisor how I might be in direct communication with this man. She gave me an email address of [email protected]; not what I had asked for. My dilemma is that I want to participate in green energy but now I feel like I will have to watch my bill and regularly inquire after my account. I would not recommend them to anyone because they have broken trust with me. If there was a competitor that offered green energy at the same cost, I would switch companies. The company may be abiding by the letter of the law, but they have certainly violated the spirit of honest business dealings that I grew up with. They seem to have several different plans that are not easy to track by their customers. WARNING: Read every word of every bill that you receive, especially the extremely fine print found in “Important Information”. It is almost exclusively very unimportant information; but this is where the important information might be found.” – Kathryn K. ⭐☆☆☆☆ January 2009
Positive reviews:
“I switched because with Green Mountain I never have had any issues to excellent customer. I signed up with a Rep outside in front of HEB. I am so proud I changed. I’ve had Reliant, Direct Energy. Green mountain had a cheaper offer. They always call me for updates or if I need anything. At the moment.. some months Usage is less and glad for that. They call me if I have any questions. To me there’s more prestige with HEB and Green Mountain Energy. They follow-up every year. I’m impressed. I also had TXU. Not a game changer. Ask questions about your bill with your provider for offers or savings..it’s worth a try. You will know what to do. I’m very grateful for HEB and Green MTN Energy.” – Norma MacLeod ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ March 2026
“Green Mountain Energy is a trusted company that is very transparent and treats customers with honor and respect. The only company that offers month to month plans with No Cancellation Fee. I signed up at night online and had light the next day. Highly recommend.” – Ashanti ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ December 2025
Negative reviews:
“Have had this company for years up until now. Their rates used to more reasonable but have recently skyrocketed. The kWh rate on my most recent bill was 19.2 cents, which is crazy. There’s fixed rate plans from other companies that are around 12.5 cents. Charging over 50% more for power is crazy and they need to work on getting their rates more competitive.” – Ian Mah ⭐☆☆☆☆ March 2026
“DO NOT FALL FOR THE TRAP… My bill gets worse and worse each month. At one point I never used my A/C for a month (max 5 minutes) just to see if it’ll decrease… guess what? The price INCREASED. They’re scam artists. Stay away if you can! Either someone is using my meter or they’re just making up numbers as they go.” – D H ⭐☆☆☆☆ January 2009
Summarizing:
Do We Recommend Green Mountain Energy Company Services?
Average Performer
Green Mountain Energy Company gets the Average Performer badge and works in 8 states, but their third-party ratings don’t go above 4. Local community trust isn’t their strong suit either – their score is 3.7 in our evaluation. This badge means they are somehow reliable, but you need to pay more attention to what they have to offer. While Green Mountain Energy Company may not lead the pack, they are certainly recognized for their capacity to meet a broad range of solar installation needs with commendable customer satisfaction. When considering this solar installer, you can add Green Mountain Energy Company to your list as a lower priority and one that requires additional research before you decide to work with them.
