“We met our salesperson, Candace, in October for the first time. She sat with us and listened to our needs for our system. We wanted to get as close as possible to zeroing out our electric bill and to provide backup power when the grid was down. Our home is 100% electric, heat, stove, dryer, etc. We have frequent grid outages ranging from a few minutes to several hours. Solar Bear came up with a solution that provided 17KW of solar panels an inverter large enough to power all our house loads and enough battery capacity to run our home for at least a day off grid. Once we agreed on the system configuration Solar Bear arranged for all the needed permits, got the equipment delivered and installed within two months. This allowed us to qualify for the expiring tax credits. This was huge as everyone was trying to get their systems installed at the same time. All of the folks we had contact with were friendly, knowledge and provided us with the information we asked for in a timely manner. The installation team was quick and skillful. They kept the area neat and clean. The installation looks great. The installation has only been live for a week or so but the output looks very good even on these overcast days we have been having. “I wish I’d started with Solar Bear! My first error was hiring a solar contractor from out of state who took my money and then fled, leaving me with a half-finished system, a huge electricity bill and a solar loan. They were totally unresponsive after they received paid and didn’t perform the task. I was marooned. Then Solar Bear came and it was like night and day. Their communication was great from the beginning, keeping me updated at every stage and always letting me know when their staff would be coming. They went above and above to make my system 100% operational and for the 1st time ever my power bill is negative! It’s been fantastic working with the whole Solar Bear team, and I can’t thank them enough. Thinking about solar? Learn from my mistake and find a credible business with expertise and a good local presence. “The sales reps and service providers where friendly and tried their best to meet our needs within their parameters. The company as a whole is unorganized when it comes to communicating with homeowners in advance schedules, inspections, and what the homeowners needs to know for next steps. We often would find out last minute (the day before) when things where going to occur which can be frusterating if you have to be there. In addition, they tried to install prior to our HOA approval-because according to them “”HOA can not legally tell them no.”” The owner, Blake, was not professional in the slightest. Inspections failed twice and the third time they passed with stipulations. Our final check in, the person looked at the amount of panels and was confused on why our size of home had the amount of panels it did. They thought we needed more, and they were correct! Our Teco bill the few months prior was a little over $600 and our current bill that had a full cycle with solar was $340. “We had an outstanding experience with Solar Bear from start to finish on our home solar installation. We loved their honest and transparent pricing, strong communication skills, and efficient project management. We found Solar Bear through Angi (the old Angie’s list). They responded to us promptly and were able to produce a detailed proposal using some basic photos of our home and past electricity bills. Dan, their rep, came out to our house and walked us through the proposal page by page at our dining room table. The heart of Solar Bear’s pitch is that we could buy the panels and installation with $0 down, and that the monthly payment on the panels would be lower than our current electric bill. With electricity costs projected to rise in coming years, our savings would increase over time. The loan we took out to cover the project (via Mosaic), also contains the flexibility to let us lower our monthly payment by paying the note aggressively during the first 18 months — including using federal and state incentives that would knock down a significant chunk of the sticker price. The numbers made sense in part because Dan patiently answered all of our questions with clarity and detail. We especially appreciated that while Solar Bear is based in Pennsylvania, they know all the ins and outs of New York’s solar incentives. Installation was smooth and well under deadline. The loan approval was quick straightforward. As promised, they took care of all the permits with the town and NYSEG, our electric utility. They also worked directly with our HOA on their permitting process. All of the paperwork was digital. Contractors and communication skills don’t always go together, but I got regular text updates at every step of the process. Because this project was for our vacation home and we were away from the house much of the time, I really liked having a clear sense of what was going on at our property. Since we just had the panels installed, I can’t yet speak to how the energy generation and savings lines up to Solar Bear’s modeling. But part of their package includes linking the panels to an app, so we’ll be able to track the panels’ performance. We really couldn’t have asked more of Solar Bear, and I wish every contracted project at our home ran as smoothly as this one did. “WARNING !! DON’T!! This is not a 5 star this is a 0 Star rating. I am extremely disappointed with my experience with Solar Bear Energy. While the solar and battery system was installed, the project has not been properly commissioned or verified, and repeated follow-up attempts have gone unanswered. The battery backup did engage during a grid outage, however no on-site testing, load verification, or simulated outage test has ever been performed. As the homeowner, I was never shown or provided written confirmation of: * Which circuits are backed up * Expected battery runtime under load * That the system performs as designed during an outage I have sent multiple emails over several weeks requesting basic commissioning and verification, including a simple on-site test. These requests have largely gone unanswered or received minimal responses that do not address the issues. A solar and battery system is a major investment. Proper testing, communication, and follow-through should be standard — especially before considering a project complete. Unfortunately, due to the lack of responsiveness and failure to properly verify the system, I cannot recommend Solar Bear Energy at this time. “PLEASE READ: Our solar and battery system was installed by Solar Bear Energy but the project was never fully commissioned. They never did a simulated outage test, despite many follow-ups. They never explicitly confirmed which circuits are backed up, and they never provided written confirmation that the system is functioning as planned. Communication finally died out. Very unsatisfactory experience for a project of this magnitude. I would not advise anybody to utilize their service. Note: They will sell it like they know what they are doing and half the time you are the one instructing them what to do. They farm the job out, and you’re kind of the project manager.
